Confession: The Struggles of Being a Blogger (Part 1 of 2)

Struggles of Being a Blogger

If only my desk were this perfect all the time.

OK I’ll admit it. Even before I typed the first word of this blog post, I actually Googled “struggles of being a blogger” to see what other bloggers in the rest of the world are struggling with. And it seems – after reading several articles and one particularly funny post filled with gifs on Buzzfeed – that bloggers do suffer from very similar things regardless of the genre of blogging.

I started blogging in 2010 because I loved writing (and makeup). Yes, I’m a chemist and I love to write. But I also cannot stand the emotive demands in literature (sorry folks), which seem way too tiring for me to catch up with. Don’t get me wrong, I do love a good Neil Gaiman every now and then, but asking me what the poetic devices used in a poem imply about language is alien speak to me. So, the only way for me to continue my love affair with words, other than the occasional trips to the bookstore, is to write. And what else to write about than my other passion in life – beauty?

There are many problems that bloggers face in their time as a blogger, and here are some of the biggest ones I faced or are facing as a style and beauty blogger in Singapore.

1. Buying a new product and not using it till photos are taken.

So I just bought a new lipstick in a new never-worn-before shade from Tom Ford. I’m dying to use it this weekend while cafe hopping, or during the next big day at work (to remind me that all that hard work is worth it). The only thing is, I can’t. Because before I even dare to apply one layer of it on my skin, I need to make sure I’ve taken all the best photos I can of it for my blog review and Instagram. Same goes for skincare products and clothes for outfit posts. Yup, no chances taken.

2. Finding a photographer.

We all know the golden hours to take shots outdoors are the one just after sunrise and the one just before sunset. Good luck trying to find someone who’s also available during those times to take that shot for you. Not only that, but that certain someone should preferably like photography as much as you like having a nice photo of you put out there for all to see. Thank God for boyfriends and Instagram husbands now, shall we?

3. How often to post.

I used to post an entry every other day of the week at the very least, even if it was a small Tip of the Day entry. That was back when I’d just graduated from university and had some extra time on my hands. However, with what little amount of time I have now, there is a need to strategise. We know that quality trumps quantity, but we also know that readers get bored easily and won’t come back if we only post once a month or so.

Tip of the Day: How to Wear Navy (and Look Stylish While at it)

How to Wear Navy

The nautical theme is so last season, babe. That’s why it can be tricky business to wear navy without looking like we didn’t get the memo. But fret not, I’ve got some tips that would help you stay classy and up-to-date. Read on to find out more about how to wear navy in style and rock it solid.

1. Wear it on its own.

Navy alone is a classic shade, just like black or beige. It is something that would never fail. Think about it, wearing an all-navy ensemble to a dinner party, beach wedding, to the movies or Sunday brunch. Chances are, you’ve already got something in mind. So yes, if you aren’t sure what to wear navy with, staying with it on its own would do just fine.

2. Wear it with neutral colours.

Some colours include black, white, nude, and brown. If you’re known for hitting the nail on the head where colour blocking is concerned, these shades can’t go wrong.

3. Wear it with denim.

Denim, where do I even begin? It can be faded denim or something that’s a darker shade of blue. Whatever the case, not everyone likes denim-on-denim. But navy-on-denim could very well be the trend you set next.

Link Love: What’s Your Life Made up of?

Kiss me hard before you go, summertime sadness. Oh, my God, I feel it in the air. Telephone wires above all sizzlin’ like your stare. Honey I’m on fire I feel it everywhere. Nothing scares me anymore.

Today’s Link Love post is inspired by my own thoughts lately about life in general. Right now, I’m in a spot or phase where I’m feeling all sorts of jaded by everything that’s going on around me. I suppose we all do get into a pit like this sometime in life, once or twice, and for some others, maybe more often. It’s not a nice place to be, not seeing or finding meaning in whatever it is that you do. So you need to just take a deep breath and do what it takes to get you to a better place.

If you’re with the right partner, every day is Valentine’s Day. But that doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate 14th February if you wanted to either. For us, it’s really another excuse to gift each other with something special and just block out time for each other. Maybe Valentine’s Day isn’t for you, and maybe it is, but for us it’s definitely a time we treasure and be thankful for having each other in our lives.

Tutorial: Glow this Valentine’s Day

Valentine's Day Makeup Tutorial

Look natural all day long.

Valentine’s Day is around the corner and lucky you has got a date. If you still can’t decide, or haven’t a clue, on what makeup look to create for the special day, I made a Valentine’s Day makeup tutorial that would help.

5 Beauty Essentials for This Chinese New Year

It’s not often when you have to stay out all day to meet people during all those hours you spend away from the comfort of your duvet. But when times like the Chinese New Year arrives, it’s time to get down to business. Looking great, I mean.

I can’t wait to get some rest during this extended break from work but like you, I’m also not looking forward to braving the humidity and making an immense effort to look great in my new clothes at 7pm in the evening. So to help me – and you – save some time in the morning while getting ready for the big day, I’ve come up with a list of 5 beauty essentials you’ll need to help you look all prepped up no matter the time of the day.

1. Blotting Sheets

Blotting paper is your best friend for the day. If you’re going to be visiting temples or anywhere with throngs of people, things are going to get heated up and sweaty. Not a pretty sight, especially if your first house visit hasn’t even begun!

2. Powder or Foundation for Touch-Ups

Once you’ve blotted away excess sebum, the next step is to touch up your makeup with some light foundation or dusting powder. What’s even better than this is a compact that includes your powder, blush, eyeshadow and brushes to help with application. You can check out my review of this cute GlamPact compact here.

3. Tinted Lip Balm or Moisturising Lip Colour

The first day of the Chinese New Year is also the first day of spring. This means it’s the start of the hot season and the sun isn’t going to back down anytime soon. Bring with you a tinted lip balm or a moisturising lip colour to keep your lips soft all day long and to prevent them from getting parched. Don’t forget to make sure that your lip balm’s shade goes well with your outfit or at least be as close to your original lip product colour as possible.

4. Small Compact Mirror

You never know when you will have access to a proper mirror, so a small mirror always comes in handy. I have one with me at all times on a daily basis, and it really helps in situations where you’ve got a stray lash in your eye or when you just really need to check on your eyeliner.

5. Travel Sized Fragrance Spray

This is another item that I carry with me every day. You know the samples that come in magazines or are freebies when you buy something at Sephora? Yes, those. They are a godsend. They are so tiny they practically weigh nothing (and so are great to carry around), but they also contain lovely fragrances that make you smell like the Garden of Eden at 4pm. If you haven’t got one of these, you can always purchase a tiny perfume spray bottle to store your signature fragrance for use on the go.

Feature: Get Comfy with SPUR

SPUR SocietyA

Caucasian and Asian hair are intrinsically different, and so are Caucasian and Asian feet. If you belong to the latter group, you must have had an experience when you tried on a pair of shoes and felt that the sides were too low and didn’t provide enough “grip” on your feet, so you felt like they were constantly going to fall off. Or you might recall those heartbreaking times when you fell in love with a pair of heels only to find them too narrow.

Might I then interest you in Korean brand, SPUR, that can be found right here on our sunny island? SPUR’s shoes are designed and crafted in Korea and have been endorsed by our favourite celebrities like Song Ji Hyo, SNSD, NANA from After School and Kim Jong Kook. Their shoes are designed to fit the Asian build so you get all the comfort you need while still looking stylish. In addition to that, for some of these, there are 7 layers in the soles to provide enough cushion so that you can stand in them all day, be it plimsolls or wedges. According to Carrie from The Cambelles, these 7 layers are:

  1. Anti-skid outsole
  2. Ankle support midsole
  3. Arch support pad
  4. Midsole
  5. Polyurethane resin insole
  6. Inner layer cushion
  7. The Upper

You can also find out more about these layers and a short interview with the founder, My Hong Ikpyo here.

SPUR has a store in Plaza Singapura (Singapore), but they have also recently launched at SocietyA, both at their online and physical stores. Their latest collection features footwear that is easy to slip on and off and is perfect for someone who travels a lot. If you’ll be doing several house visits during festive periods, like the upcoming Chinese New Year or the annual Hari Raya Aidilfitri, you might want to give these a try.

A Year Older, a Year Wiser

Jiyugaoka Matcha Cake

If only all matcha cakes were made this good.

I don’t know the best way to put this but I’m officially 30! What started as something that had never crossed my mind – a future so distant I could only dream it – became a reality that hit me quite hard. To put it simply, I didn’t take it very well the night before the sun was set to rise again. As I lay in bed, tears welled up in my eyes while I pondered upon what this new decade would mean to me, horrified at the prospect of possibly turning into a soccer mum.

OK, I might be exaggerating a little. But turning the big three-o did make me reflect upon my life and where it seemed to be headed. I mean, I’ve now ventured irreversibly into the big unknown and that is pretty scary. If I could relive my last 30 years, I’m not sure what I would do differently, or if I would even have the chance to.

As the night wore on, a story I once read came to my mind, one about the biggest regrets of the dying elderly. I didn’t know what my biggest regret was that night, because all of those seniors did teach me after all to live my life to the fullest and spend time with loved ones. But it struck me one day later that if I were to have any regrets at this point in my life, it would be that there are only 24 hours in a day and that I can only do so much.

30 is still a young age, and the next 10 years are going to be the prime of my life. And a part of me looks forward to finding out how my life is going to change (and be more awesome, obviously). But a part of me knows that having my cake and eating it is going to be a struggle.

There are people who don’t believe that you can have it all in your life. But I honestly beg to differ. Life is what you make it out to be but you need to let that sink in and digest it before you can truly understand what that means. There are tons of things I want to do and achieve, and many people I want to hold on to as a facet of my however transient life. But that’s the thing, the crux of it all – that I only have one life. And so, I need to be selective.
