Tip of the Day: How to Survive the Festive Season

How to Survive the Festive Season

Christmas may be over but there’s still the end of the year – and the start of the new one – that we’ve yet to celebrate. If you need some advice on how to survive the festive season, I may have some pointers to help you out.

1.Stay away from alcohol.

OK maybe not all of it, especially if you normally reach for a glass of champagne out of habit. But know your limits and avoid getting drunk. When you wake up the next morning without a hangover, you’ll thank me – and your self control – for it.

2. Get enough rest the night before.

You’ll want to be awake for the countdown, so you’ll need energy to last the day. ‘Nuff said.

3. Keep your tummy and heart filled.

What is the holiday season without good food and great company? Gather those closest to you and just hang out and enjoy one another’s company. Even if it’s just one other person and some really good pizza, at least your last day of the year would be meaningful and warm. If none of you can cook well, there are many companies out there that offer catering services for this time of the year. Don’t miss out!

Haul: Seoul Shopping Featuring Innisfree, the Saem, Dear Packer and more

Seoul Shopping Haul

I recently visited Seoul and ended up buying so much stuff. Each day I spent there was more than enough time to leisurely visit a neighbourhood, and that’s exactly what I did. Add in some relaxing times in cafes, as I watched the world go by and just enjoyed the wintry atmosphere.

Shopping in Seoul can be a crazy thing. Maybe it was a good thing I went during winter, because otherwise I’d most likely have ended up getting tons of clothes and shoes as well. In today’s Seoul shopping haul video, I share with you the awesome deals that I snagged along the streets of Edae and Hongdae to name a few. You’d want to watch this because I’m sure you’ve never seen mask sheets in matte and gold foil packaging, nor DIY masks that allow you to whip up your own recipe in your own home.

I’m not sure if you’ll find things like that gorgeous scarf if you head to Seoul in the summer, but the wonderful streets will be nicer to walk on when you don’t have to brave the cold. You’ll also be able to enjoy a good serving of patbingsu whenever you need to take a break.

Tutorial: Metallic Rose Gold Nails for the Festive Season

Rose Gold Nails by Laced Ivory

There’s no denying it: Rose gold is the colour of the moment. What better way to say you love this shade than by wearing it on your nails for the holiday season?

I created this rose gold nail art because I’m just so in the mood recently and I wanted to share with you how you can do it yourself with just some nail lacquers. If you’re afraid of gelish, this is a good way to make sure your manicure stays put till the party’s over.

Rose Gold Nails by Laced Ivory

A few shots of the rose gold nails up close (under warm indoor lighting and diffused natural light), with a couple of the products I used. I’m loving the 3CE Nail Lacquer Glitter in GT02 (top) and the Butter London Nail Lacquer in Rosie Lee (bottom right).

Step 1: Apply a base coat.

Any base coat will be fine, so you can use your favourite or current one. Make sure the layer is thin and dries for about 2 minutes before you apply the next layer.

Step 2: Apply the base colour.

A gold colour works best. One layer is enough to get the metallic sheen. Here, I used the Maybelline Color Show Nail Lacquer in 008 Bold Gold. Let it dry for 2 minutes.

Step 3: Apply a layer of big sequins.

Make sure you spread the sequins out over the entire nail. The sequins don’t have to cover every space there is, but cover about 80%-90% of your nail with the sequin bits. I’m using the 3CE Nail Lacquer Glitter in GT02. You can check it out on the Stylenanda website here.  Let it dry for 2 minutes.

Step 4: Apply a layer of small, deep pink sparkles.

One coat should be enough, if you use the Butter London Nail Lacquer in Rosie Lee, like I did here. The point is to create several layers of reflective surfaces so that your nails can catch light from more directions, and thus look even more sparkly and festive. Let it dry for 2 minutes.

Step 5: Apply another layer of big sequins.

Use the same polish as you did in Step 3 above. You can add as much as you did in Step 3, and this time, try to cover any gold spaces left on your nails as well. There shouldn’t be much uncovered space at this point though. Let it dry for 2 minutes.

Step 6: Apply a layer of top coat.

This should be a no brainer. Every manicure starts with a base coat and ends with a top coat. I’m using OPI’s Rapidry Quick Drying Top Coat. Let it dry for 2 minutes.

Step 7: Go over the nail tips with a top coat.

To make sure your manicure lasts even longer than your possible hangover (You shouldn’t!), brush over the tips of your nails with some top coat. This will help to prevent premature chipping of the polish.

Review: The DCS Nutriderm Ultra Nutrition Night Cream & Ultra Nutrition Toner

DCS Nutriderm Review

Sometime back, I wrote a review on the DCS Aquaderm range, where I tried out the toner, day cream and ampoule. This time, I got to try out a couple more products from the DCS Nutriderm range and am quite pleased with the Ultra Nutrition Night Cream, in particular.

Like all DCS products, this range contains skin-loving volcanic seawater from Jeju, Seoul, which is rich in minerals like selenium and zinc, that help to repair and regenerate skin. The main difference between the Nutriderm and Aquaderm ranges is that the Nutriderm range is targeted towards anti-ageing because it contains the key ingredient of Korean red ginseng berry.

I am a huge fan of Korean red ginseng skincare products, as not only is this ingredient so rare (it’s harvested once every four years over a seven-day period), it really works wonders to help maintain youthful skin. If you haven’t given Korean red ginseng a try, I highly recommend it.

The main thing you’ll notice about both the Ultra Nutrition Toner and Ultra Nutrition Night Cream – and the other products in the range, I’m sure – is the smell of ginseng the moment you place the product close to your skin. Two words: It’s heavenly. It could actually mostly be fragrance but the scent is enough to make me feel like I’m really applying full-on ginseng to my skin. Now that I think of it, I’m not even sure how ginseng fragrance is made. Maybe it’s just ginseng.

Tip of the Day: How to Wear Lavender

How to Wear Lavender

Ever have a colour that you avoid like the plague? Yep, I’m sure you do. For me, it’s orange – neon orange, to be exact but all shades of orange are a no-no. Maybe your no-shade is lavender. And this is why today’s post is all about how to wear lavender even when you don’t think you ever will.

As seen from the photos above, lavender is actually quite a wearable colour. It’s light enough to suit a pastels theme, and it can also be loud enough to fit a jewel-toned look. Here’s what you can do if you’ve got your heart on something of this shade:

1. Wear it with white.

Lavender goes really well with white, as you can see. It can be a pair of jeans, a casual blazer or even a laced cropped top. Whatever it is, white sure adds on a relaxed feel to the entire look.

2. Wear it with dark colours.

Something like navy, dark grey or black will work just fine as well. It adds contrast to your outfit, so the you don’t look so washed out. Something dark is perfect if you’re lighter elsewhere, such as your skin tone, or the whites you’re wearing as well.

3. Denim works.

I love denim because of its versatility. It goes with almost anything and you can bet a lavender top will match it well too. Your denim can be in the form of dark blue jeans, a lighter moto jacket or even a pastel-coloured skirt. Here’s how I wore my lavender top with jeans and sparkly heels a while back.

4. Play with nude pieces.

Nude coloured pieces, such as strappy heels, platforms, or even a handbag will go well with lavender. Even a scarf or statement necklace that is predominantly nude or beige can be worn.

5. Mix and match with textures.

Metallic pieces or accessories will add some glam to your outfit. You might find it hard to own something metallic but look carefully in your stash and you’re bound to find it. Check your bags, jewellery, shades and even pullovers. Perhaps you have a brooch or two that would fit nicely on your white blazer, worn over your lavender top. You can even have lavender nails, like how I did with this shade from Nails Inc.

Tutorial: African Violet Holiday Look 2015 with Laura Mercier

Laura Mercier Eye Art Artist's Palette Tutorial

Hello there! I’m finally back from Seoul – what a wonderful time to just be chilling in cafes and watch the world go by. But now that I’m back in rainy Singapore, here’s another video I filmed. This time, I’ve created another holiday look in case the previous one was a bit too heavy for you.

Today’s look is courtesy of the Laura Mercier Eye Art Artist’s Palette for the year, which is a palette filled with gorgeous purples, peaches and a good espresso black for the smoky eye look. The colours are quite pigmented, though if you’re afraid of something that’s too much, you don’t need to use a wet brush and can still get a good enough effect (like in my tutorial).

Today’s holiday look video is titled “African Violet,” which is the name of my favourite shade from the palette. I know you can see imperfections on my skin even though foundation has already been applied before filming. I’m quite afraid of concealers, to be honest, because my skin is so sensitive that liquid or cream products just have me reeling away in fear with good reason. So if you have a regular concealer routine before this, just go ahead with it.

  • Heroine Make‘s Volume and Curl Mascara Super Water Proof
  • 3CE‘s Shimmer Glow Bloc

  • Laura Mercier‘s Paint Wash Liquid Lip Colour in Nude Rose

You can find the Laura Mercier Eye Art Artist’s Palette in Laura Mercier counters near you. Also, my blog review on the Laura Mercier Paint Wash Liquid Lip Colour can be found here. I hope you enjoyed this video as much as I did making it. Do subscribe to my channel for more videos.

Link Love: A Little Bit of Seoul (and My Travel Recommendations)

Things to do in Seoul

Hello you! I hope you’ve been well. If you’re following me on Instagram (if you’re not, head on over to @lacedivory), you’ll know I’m currently visiting the lovely city of Seoul. I was here just one year ago, and this time I’m back for the winter. There are so many things to see here and I love what I’ve seen and experienced. Of course, shopping has been crazy and I’ve spent way too much money.

Today’s Link Love post is dedicated to some cool blogs out there that talk about certain parts of Seoul that I particularly feel for and would love for you to know about. I’ve personally visited these places and do recommend that you add them to your itinerary too.

1.  Gabrielle from From KD to Kimchi shares street snaps from her stroll along my favourite part of Seoul, Samcheongdong.

2. Tricia from Tricia Will Go Places shares her experience around Hongdae.

3. MisSuety from MisSuety lets us in on the things to do in Samcheongdong. A must-read, especially since I love this neighbourhood so much!

Rave & Review: The Tom Ford Black Dahlia Lip Colour Matte Lipstick

Tom Ford Black Dahlia Review

Winter in Seoul with Tom Ford.

Hello from Seoul, South Korea! I thought it best to take a short break from street shopping to blog a little bit about my new favourite beauty product, the Tom Ford Black Dahlia Lip Colour Matte Lipstick. I apologise first for pictures that aren’t too gorgeous, as I’m taking these pictures from my phone.

I first heard about this lip colour from Elle’s article about why everyone can wear this shade. And I mean everyone from all skin tones who dare to wear a bold lip for the winter. Because it’s Elle and because I’ve never bought a Tom Ford lippie, I thought this was a great chance to get it. I mean, Elle said it would suit me and all the models in their article looked great in it.

So I dropped by the Tom Ford counter while shopping for Christmas presents one evening and tried the lipstick on to see if I would have an allergic reaction to it. Better safe than sorry, I always say. After walking around the mall for a while, nothing happened to my lips so I went back and spent some hard-earned money on it. At S$75 per pop, it had better not make me itchy.

Rave & Review: The Laura Mercier Paint Wash Liquid Lip Colour in Nude Rose

Laura Mercier Paint Wash Liquid Lip Colour in Nude Rose

The Laura Mercier Paint Wash Liquid Lip Colour in Nude Rose.

It isn’t often that you find a beauty product that you feel like you’re going to keep using for the rest of your life. Or the foreseeable future, at least. That’s just how I see the Laura Mercier Paint Wash Liquid Lip Colour in Nude Rose. This product has made my day many more times than I’d expected it to, ever since I got hold of it at Sephora one fine afternoon shopping with my best friend.
