Are you still looking for the perfect Christmas present to gift to a loved one this year? Perhaps some makeup books could do the trick, especially if it’s someone who’s really into makeup and almost already owns all the makeup in the world. Books are a great treat as they make for a great wind-down “me” time on the daybed. Here are a couple of my favourites and some books (recently published) that I would like to get my hands on.

    Making Faces by Kevyn Aucoin.

    Face Forward by Kevyn Aucoin.

Kevyn Aucoin was a celebrity makeup artist who had a hard time trying to fit into society even before he became famous. These two books are a staple on any makeup enthusiast’s shelf. If there’s any one book on makeup you could get, I highly recommend any of the two. Not only does Kevyn Aucoin talk about makeup basics, he also explains the different facial features and how to best enhance them using the different types and textures of makeup out there in the market.

Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual - For Everyone from Beginner to Pro.

The colour pink just makes me want to get the Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual, written by none other than Bobbi Brown herself. As Bobbi Brown is one of my favourite cosmetic brands, I would love to own this book. I suppose the tips inside are geared towards their own products but you can still apply the tips and tricks to your other products and dupes as well. After all, there are no clear boundaries in the world of makeup.

MAKEUP IS ART Professional techniques for creating original looks by AOFM - Second edition.

This makeup book by the pro artists at the Academy of Freelance Makeup (AOFM), was launched in 2011 as a second edition after their highly successful first edition. Comprising lots of pictures of made up looks, the book makes for a great coffee table book that will entertain anyone who comes to visit! I don’t think the looks are for normal daytime wear, as it seems that most of them are rather elaborate and dedicated to the industry’s professionals. A nice eye feast though!

About Face - Amazing Transformations Using the Secrets of the Top Celebrity Makeup Artist by Scott Barnes.

Scott Barnes is another industry whos who, having done the makeup of celebrities like Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian. In the book, you’ll find step-by-step makeup techniques and a little bit about the tools of the trade. You’ll find out how to use makeup to help you look your best as can be.

Makeup Your Mind: Express Yourself by Francois Nars.

From the creator of well-loved cosmetic brand Nars, this makeup book describes how we should apply our makeup. The products to use, the places to apply them on and pictorials that take us through the process mean that not only do you get some eye candy, you’ll also learn the correct method of applying your makeup. View transformations as the book’s models of different ethnic groups turn from naught to hot.

Retro Makeup: Techniques for Applying the Vintage Look by Lauren Rennells.

As a follow-up to her previous publication, Vintage Hairstyling: Retro Styles with Step-by-Step Techniques, Lauren Rennells has come up with a makeup book to tell us all about creating that vintage look. This book must be the quirkiest of them all and even the front cover is so cute! It teaches us about the makeup and styles all the way back from the 1920s. If you’ve got a vintage themed dinner and dance party coming up, you might like to flip through this to see what you can find!
